Meet the Maker: Megan of Nestled
This week in our ongoing Meet the Maker series, we’re excited to introduce you to Megan of Nestled.
LBC: When did you start your business and what inspired you to take the leap as an entrepreneur?
Megan: I started Nestled in early 2012. I have always loved fashion and style, and making jewelry was a part of my passion! My older sister is also an entrepreneur, and she was the one who ultimately urged me to make my hobby into a business.
LBC: How would you describe what you create?
Megan: I create colorful handmade statement jewelry that’s trendy, fashionable, and affordable!
LBC: Where can we find your products?
Megan: Right now, I sell exclusively on Etsy (www.ShopNestled.etsy.com), but hope to someday branch out into the wholesale world as well.
LBC: What inspires you?
Megan: I’m inspired by anything colorful! The fashion world is obviously a big source of inspiration, but I also get ideas from things like nature, home decor – anything that’s pretty!
LBC: Tell us about a few of the best business decisions you’ve made.
Megan: The best business decision I’ve made is to just follow my gut. To think creatively, be original, and do what I feel is best. If I start to worry about what others may think, everything gets off track. I simply trust my instincts, and everything works out!
LBC: What’s been one of the biggest obstacles you’ve encountered during your journey as a maker and how have you managed to conquer or mitigate it?
Megan: The handmade world is full of creative, unique thinkers, but there’s also those who will copy your designs and steal your ideas. I’ve encountered this a few times, and it can be very frustrating. But instead of letting it get me down, I’ve learned to use it as motivation to think more creatively, and come up with new and better ideas.
LBC: Suppose we had a time machine. If we blasted ourselves forward a few years, where would we see your company?
Megan: Like I said earlier, I haven’t yet started selling my jewelry designs wholesale. It’s something I’ve thought a lot about and would love to start doing in the future! In a few years, I hope we’ll see my handmade jewelry sold in stores and boutiques around the U.S. That would be awesome!
LBC: Please share one of your favorite resources: a book, a website, an app, a gadget, an event… anything that’s helped save time, money or sanity!
Megan: I absolutely love GoDaddy Bookkeeping. I can synch it with my online shop and PayPal account, and it keeps track of all my income and expenses for me. When tax time comes along, it’s a complete lifesaver! Every Etsy shop owner should use it!
LBC: Tell us about a pearl of wisdom someone has shared with you. Who said it and how did it help propel you forward?
Megan: I’ve heard lots of great advice during my journey as a handmade artist. I think the best advice I’ve heard, and what I’d like to share as well, is to do something you love. I love making pretty jewelry, and I’m so grateful that I’m able to do it everyday. If you don’t enjoy the work you do, it will feel simply like that: work. But if you do something you truly enjoy, “work” will be a totally different (and fun!) experience.
LBC: What is your favorite food?
Megan: Anything chocolate or coffee… even better if the two are combined! I absolutely love tiramisu.
LBC: Where would your dream vacation take you?
Megan: Any beach, any where! I love warm weather, and could bask in the sun all day long. I would love to visit Hawaii or the Caribbean.
What recipe is most requested from you?
Megan: My mom taught me how to make this great chocolate chiffon cake with chocolate icing. It’s my go-to dessert, and people always love it and ask for the recipe!
