Meet the Maker - Anit Hora of Mullein and Sparrow

This week in our ongoing Meet the Maker series, we’re getting to know Anit Hora, the founder of Brooklyn-based apothecary brand Mullein and Sparrow. Welcome, Anit!

LBC: What inspired you to take your leap as an entrepreneur?

Anit: As simple as this is, I have always dreamed of having my own business, so becoming an entrepreneur was following my heart.

LBC: When you first got started, how did you envision your business would be defined?

Anit: I thought it would be a small project in the local herb community in Brooklyn. I never thought this would get any bigger than my apartment!

LBC: How would you describe what you create?

Anit: I create holistic skin care products that are truly special. I want every product in my collection to be that perfect treasure in your beauty ritual.

LBC: Where can we find your products?

Anit: Online (including websites like Anthropologie, Birchbox, Fab, Joss and Main, and One Kings Line) and in select stores nationwide (including stores like Young Blood Boutique, American Museum of Natural History, PAPAYA! Living, and Clementine).

LBC: Walk us through your typical work day.

Anit: There is no typical work day! I wear so many hats that no two work days are alike.

LBC: What are 3 things makers should think through when they initially decide to start a business?

Anit: First, consider that starting a business is a huge sacrifice for time and your personal life. Once you’re okay with that, consider that you won’t make money initially. If you are okay with that, know your limits, because your business will be challenging and pushing them.

LBC: When you’re overwhelmed, what brings you back to focus?

Anit: Yoga and dessert.

LBC: Tell us about a few of the best business decisions you’ve made to date.

Anit: I decided to take on some challenging projects that involved high volume production that everyone told me not to do. I knew that capital would take my business to the next level, and they did!

LBC: Please share one mistake or obstacle from your business experience. How did you bounce back/overcome it?

Anit: When you own your own business, obstacles are a given, so it’s hard to pick just one. I bounce back by simply moving on.

LBC: Is there a cause or organization that you contribute to that you’re particularly passionate about?

Anit: We work with the Good Karma project and will donate a portion of our Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales to Farm Sanctuary.

LBC: What are 3 essential resources in your business toolbox that you can’t do without?

Anit: I can’t do without my staff, accounting, and chocolate.

LBC: Suppose we had a time machine. If you blasted ourselves forward a few years, where would we see your company?

Anit: I see Mullein and Sparrow becoming expanding from apothecary beauty products to a complete lifestyle brand.

LBC: Your musical playlist is full of…

Anit: I love a lot of music from the 90’s, and I am also surprisingly really into tango music. If I need a guilty pleasure / pick me up, I listen to the Little Mermaid soundtrack!

LBC: Tell me a few of places on your travel “bucket list”.

Anit: I really want to go to Mongolia—they have amazing textiles.

LBC: What’s your best recipe?

Anit: My Immortelle and Myrhh face serum. 😉
